I’ve learned a little about fishing recently. Not in a stream or lake, but taking a new look at “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.”
Of course, I love that saying and always thought it was true. And in a perfect world, it might be. The problem is that many people don’t want to fish. You can buy them the best pole, the best bait, teach them, and even lead them to the lake. But they don’t want to put the bait in the water. They don’t want to wait for the fish to bite. They don’t want to reel it in. They just want the fish. Already cleaned and cooked, by the way.
So for the person with an attitude like that, the kindest thing to do is not to continue to give him fish. The kindest thing is give him old bread, and leave the opportunities for more available. Unfortunately, it is up to him to decide whether he wants more out of life.
